Web 2.0 Technology


Web 2.0 involves making newly improved forms of online connection between two or more people, two or more online services or between individual users and software applications.

Web services
This includes the ability to use web functionality from different websites and plug them together to create new services or ‘Mashups’.

For example, an estate agent website can plug in ads from other agents and usGoogle Earth to show location of each property. Online payment sites such as WorldPay or PayPal can be plugged into online e-commerce websites e.g Ebay. Also anyone can plug in a YouTube video into their own website using the Embed link 
  
 
Software as a Services (SaaS)

This involves application functionality being offered directly over the internet. Use of data and applications can be access from any internet enabled computing device. This includes Google Docs which is an online Word processing, Spreadsheet and Presentation service. Another example is Zoho Writer, Jooce a Free Online Desktop


Interpersonal computing
 this uses onlines services to connect people and businesses together in social networks e.g. social networking sites, wikis, blogs and online video. These include myspace, Facebook, Youtube, Kaltura – all of these sites allow anybody to add as well as to access content to any of these sites. They can leave messages and comments and well as exchange digital media and video

Web Hardware and Software Components.

Web Server
A web server is software that sends out web pages in response to requests from web browsers. A page request is then  generated when a visitor clicks a link on a web page in the browser, selects a bookmark in the browser, or enters a URL in the browser’s address text box.


                                 
Mail Server
Mail server is an application that receives and sends e-mail to and from local users. A computer dedicated to running such applications is also called a mail server.


                                  


                                    
Router
A router is a machine, that can also be software, it acts as a gateway to provide access to network resources, irrespective of the protocols or operating systems the users use. You could also have wifi (wireless)  routers this makes the access to the gateway more easier with less problems.

Switch
A switch is a component which is used within a computer network.A switch has a number of ports and it stores the addresses of all network devices that are directly or indirectly connected to it on each port. As a data packet comes into the switch, its destination address is examined and a direct connection is made between the sending and receiving machines.



LAN
Local Area Network is a physical network technology that operates at high speed over short distances. LANs link computers within offices, buildings, and multi-building sites like university campuses.


WAN
Wide Area Network is a synonym for a network that spans across a large area, usually city-size or larger.

Internet
A world-wide research network sharing a common addressing scheme and using the TCP/IP software protocol for data transfer between hosts. It is composed of many individual campus, state, national, and regional networks. Numerous organizations including private enterprise now have web sites.

Browsers
Browser is a software programme for showing World Wide Web pages. Also called a Client. Examples are Mosaic, Netscape, Internet Explorer. Different browsers can display the same Web page in different ways depending on the browser's design and the users preferences for font size, style, colour etc.

Email Clients
Electronic mail is the transfer of messages between you and other users in a network, or users in other network systems. E-mail is similar to an ordinary letter; you supply the address of the recipient(s) and the text of the message. It is different in that delivery takes place in minutes or hours rather than days. Electronic mail provides private communications, whereas electronic conferencing provides group communications.

URL
The Uniform Resource Locator is the address of the document or page. The browser or client sends a message to the server which contains the page which is then sent back to the client.


Domain Name
A name for an IP address, which may have various suffixes, such as .com, .net, .edu, or.org. Google Page Rank- A system which ranks pages within the Google search engine and determines the importance of the web page, based on a scale of 1 to 10.

Hypertext Transfer Protocol is the basic protocol of the Web used to transfer hypertext documents

WWW
World Wide Web is a hypertext information and communications system in which Web clients can access hypermedia information on servers.

ISP
Internet Service Providers offer connection to the Internet either via broadband (ADSL, Cable Modem or Satellite), or via dial-up connection. ISP's often provide email services and some are beginning to offer anti-spam and virus on their email services.



Web Hosting
Web hosting is the process of storing a website on a web server to it accessible on the Internet. This service is usually provided by your ISP or a specialist hosting company. It requires a permanent Internet connection and Web server.
